Abbey Leonardi, a junior from Kennebunk High, finished second at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday to qualify for the national finals in two weeks in San Diego.
Leonardi repeated her runner-up finish from a year ago behind two-time regional champion Aisling Cuffe of New York, who won Satuday’s 5-kilometer race at Sunken Meadow State Park on New York’s Long Island in 17 minutes, 51 seconds.
Leonardi was second in 18:02. The top 10 finishers earned berths in the national finals, scheduled for Dec. 11 in San Diego’s Balboa Park.
Emily Durgin, a Cheverus junior who qualified for nationals a year ago with a seventh-place regional finish, placed 24th on Saturday in a time of 19:03. Brunswick junior Katie McMahon was 42nd in 19:58.
In the boys’ seeded race, Madison junior Matt McClintock was the first Maine finisher. He placed 42nd in 16:37. Boothbay Region junior Chase Brown (77th) and Telstar freshman Josef Holt-Andrews (98th) also finished among the top 100.
