‘American Hardcore’ author
Steven Blush, author of “American Hardcore: A Tribal History,” will appear from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Portland Public Library.
Blush is promoting the second edition of this book, which led to the documentary “American Hardcore: The History of American Punk Rock 1980-1986.”
Deering Oaks food drive
Animal Rights Maine is hosting its monthly food drive at the Deering Oaks Farmer’s Market, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. Food donations accepted, including fresh produce and money. All donations ill be given to Preble Street, where more than 6,000 free meals are served each week.
Fire Museum open house
The Portland Veteran Fireman Association is hosting an annual open house Saturday with live horses in the original stalls, an 1855 steam engine, 1938 McCann Fire Truck and other memorabilia at the City of Portland Fire Department Museum, 157 Spring St.
Contemporary contrabass
The Portland Conservatory of Music is presenting a recital of contemporary music for contrabass performed by Joshua DeScherer of Brunswick 7:30 p.m. Friday in Memorial Hall at Woodfords Congregational Church. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students or senior citizens. Parking is available in the church parking lot.

Wolfe’s Neck work party
Wolfe’s Neck Farm will hold a work party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday as part of a worldwide event focusing on climate change.
The Earth Club from Freeport High School, the Chewonki Foundation, Coastal Studies for Girls, the Freeport Conservation Trust and Wolfe’s Neck Farm will host the event and other participants.

Halloween fashion sale
The “ladies of vintage fashion,” including Caustic Culture, North Star Vintage, Ophelia, Really Really, Foreside Antiques, Grandma June, Que Sera Sera, The Find, Elsmore, Concetta’s Closet, will be at Rise Gallery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday for a special Halloween sale.
The as-darkness-falls discount sale begins at 4 p.m. Rain date will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Rise Gallery is at 864 Broadway.
FALMOUTH
Field photo show, talk
Fred Field, photographer and author of “Maine Places, Maine Faces: photo journalistic look at Maine and her people,” will exhibit at the Falmouth Memorial Library through Nov. 11.

Skillin at Historical Society
Mike Skillin and other family members will present “The History of Skillins’ Greenhouses” at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday after the Falmouth Historical Society’s meeting starting at 7 p.m. in the Russell Room at Falmouth Memorial Library.
The greenhouses are Falmouth’s oldest business. The annual meeting will include brief reports by the officers and election of officers for 2010 through 2012.
