More than 100 antique automobiles from around the world will rally at the Owls Head Transportation Museum Saturday and Sunday for the museum’s annual Foreign Auto Festival and Antique Aeroplane Show.
While a diverse range of stunning vehicles is expected at the event, this year the Owls Head Transportation Museum is celebrating Jaguars as the featured marque.
Owners of pre-1993 foreign automobiles and all Jaguar owners — regardless of year — are invited to exhibit their vehicles free of charge.
Exhibitor gates open at 8:30 a.m., and gates open to the public at 9 a.m.
The annual event attracts foreign-car enthusiasts from all over the state who peruse everything from luxury sedans to high-performance sports cars. The variety can be impressive: Austin Healey, MG, Triumph, Porsche, Ferrari, Citroën, Mercedes, BMW, Rolls- Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Volkswagen and more. The meet draws a large number of Japanese models, as well.
Members of the Down East Porsche Club and Mid Maine Sports Car Club are expected to attend, and featured display cars will include a 1930 Bentley Speed 6 and a 1955 Jaguar XK140.
Jaguar Scarborough will be at the Museum on Saturday, October 5 to showcase and discuss new-model Jaguars, including the new Jaguar F-Type, which will be on hand for museum guests to see.
On both days of the show, Owls Head Transportation Museum Aircraft Conservator Karl Erickson and a team of dedicated aviation workshop volunteers and pilots will demonstrate the museum’s unrivaled collection of antique aircraft.
The most recent addition — the last surviving 1930 Pitcairn PA-7S Sport Mailwing — will take to the skies, and additional planes that may fly for demonstrations include the museum’s 1941 Stearman, its 1933 Waco, its 1916 Sopwith Pup, its 1923 Fokker C.IV and its beloved 1917 Fokker DR.I triplane — also known as the Red Baron).
The museum’s open flightline, also scheduled for both days of the event, provides an opportunity for visitors to see, hear and experience the planes close up and visit with pilots.
Rain or shine, visitors will have access to the museum’s indoor collection featuring dozens of rare antique cars, motorcycles and aeroplanes. Guests will also have an opportunity to view the museum’s exhibition, “MGs & Microcars,” showcasing a unique collection of more than 25 MGs and small cars from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s.
Admission is $12 for adults and, as always, children younger than 18 are admitted to the museum and show free of charge.
Refreshments catered by French & Brawn Catering and Market Place will be available for purchase at the Caboose during both days of the show. No pets are allowed in the museum or on show grounds.
Any visitor who renews a membership or purchases a new membership on the day of an event is automatically entered in a drawing for a scenic ride in the museum’s 1941 Stearman biplane. One winner is drawn at noon and one at 3 p.m. each day of the event.
