The good karma generated by all those downward-facing dog poses you’ve done over the years will manifest itself this Sunday, when the first-ever Yogathon benefit comes to the Maine State Pier in Portland.

Organized by 98.9 WCLZ, the event features instructors from 15 local yoga studios offering 20-minute sessions throughout the day. All the money raised will support the homeless services provided by Preble Street.

“We were brainstorming about an event we could do in the fall that would tie in to a charity and also bring in our listeners,” said Ethan Minton, program director for 98.9 WCLZ. “We felt yoga would appeal to our listeners.”

As of Monday, more than 100 people had signed up to take part in the event, and many more are expected to register the day of the benefit. Minton anticipates that some people will stay all day, and others will come and go throughout the Yogathon.

Registration costs $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event. Participants are encouraged to get pledges from family and friends as an additional way to raise funds for the cause.

The event is geared to both beginners and advanced yoga students, and the sessions will offer instruction in a wide range of yoga styles. If the weather is good, the yoga will be done in the open air. Should it rain, the classes will take place under a tent.

Those who participate should bring a yoga mat or towel, a water bottle and lunch. Snacks and water will be available.
