Thumbs up to the Biddeford City Council for voting to allow the La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival to move back to St. Louis Field. The festival has long been a summer staple in the community, and allowing festival organizers to bring it back to St. Louis Field – the original

location of La Kermesse – will hopefully let it become as popular as it once was. Although the festival had to leave St. Louis Field in 2009 after it caused extensive damages there, festival organizers have shown great effort in drafting plans to protect against future damage to the field.

Thumbs up to Art and Fran Girard for their gift of Ram Island to the University of New England. The university plans to use the island as a “learning laboratory” and maintain the island’s natural habitat. It is a generous gift,

and one sure to benefit students for years to come.

Thumbs up to everyone who took part in the search for Russell Earle, the 9-year-old Labrador retriever who was hit by a car and lost in the woods for five days. Neighbors, friends and strangers searched for many days to find him, and there’s a happy ending to this unhappy event.

A savvy Maine Lost Dog Recovery volunteer had a hunch and walked down a trail where she found the nice old Lab on a knoll, surrounded by a stream. Russell Earle has a broken pelvis, but he was due to have surgery this week, and is expected to fully recover. We wish him many more good doggie years ahead.

Thumbs up to all the folks who volunteer their time and effort during this busy season to host Christmasthemed events in their communities. It takes a lot of work, and the volunteers deserve a hearty round of applause and

perhaps a mug of hot chocolate and a candy cane for their good work. Thumbnails is a Friday feature of the Journal Tribune’s opinion pages. If you want to respond, feel free to write to the Readers’ Forum via e-mail (jtcommunity@journaltribune.com) or by dropping your letter off at our office.
