AUGUSTA — Second-seeded Boothbay Region advanced to the Western Class C boys’ basketball semifinals with a 73-60 victory against 10th-ranked Traip Academy on Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.
The Seahawks (16-3) took a 35-33 halftime lead, then pulled away.
Anthony DiMauro scored 29 points for the Seahawks, who held off a late surge.
Traip (9-9) got a pair of 3-pointers from Mark McKenney in the fourth quarter, his second closing the gap to 67-60 with 45.9 seconds to play.
But the Rangers were forced to foul and the Seahawks hit 6 of 8 free throws.
“Overall we’ll take the year in getting here,” said Traip Coach Jeremy Paul. “I told these guys they’ve got nothing to hang their heads about. They left it all out there.”
Paul said his team took a step back on offense in the second half after shooting well in the first.
“Any shot we wanted we were getting (in the first half),” he said. “Ultimately it was defense (that hurt us), which is frustrating because we spent time working on it. We wanted to limit their dribble penetration.”
Traip got 15 points from Nathan Westman, 14 from McKenney, and 12 from Brian Goda.
DIRIGO 58, LIVERMORE FALLS 46: Cody St. Germain scored all 11 of his points in the first half as the top-ranked Cougars (17-2) built a 26-17 halftime lead and held on for a win over the eighth-seeded Andies (12-8) in a Western Class C quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center.
Josh Turbide added 10 points for Dirigo and Ben Holmes scored nine.
Livermore Falls was paced by Mike Armstrong with 18 points.
GIRLS
RANGELEY 52, VINALHAVEN 37: The second-seeded Lakers (16-3) struggled for the better part of three quarters against a team they twice beat handily in the regular season, then pulled away from seventh-ranked Vinalhaven (8-8) in a Western Class D quarterfinal at Augusta.
Chantal Carrier scored 27 points to pace Rangeley, doing much of her damage inside. She scored nine points in the first quarter and 10 in the fourth to go with eight rebounds.
The Lakers led 11-6 at the end of one quarter and 21-14 at the half, despite committing 18 first-half turnovers.
Ashley Hamilton scored 13 points for Vinalhaven.
