GEORGETOWN — A Georgetown man fatally shot himself in his home Monday morning after police say he allegedly assaulted a woman and threatened her with a gun.
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office was called shortly after 8 a.m. to a home on Bay Point Road where the alleged assault happened. According to a press release, 26-year-old Tayler Locke assaulted a 21-year-old woman and threatened her with a handgun. He reportedly fired the weapon at some point, but no one was injured.
Locke left that residence and went to his home, also on Bay Point Road.
Several deputies and Bath police officers were dispatched to the area.
The first deputy to arrive at Locke’s home found him there. After a brief encounter, Locke retreated inside.
Knowing Locke had a firearm, police shut down the road. Employees at the nearby town office were told not to leave the building.
Deputies weren’t able to make contact with Locke, who was alone inside, according to the release. At approximately 10 a.m., deputies entered the home and discovered Locke had fatally shot himself.
Sheriff Joel Merry said the victim, a relative of Locke, was taken by a family member to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick where she was treated and released. Merry said the sheriff’s office is investigating the incident as a possible sexual assault.
“The incident remains under investigation as deputies attempt to determine the events leading up to today’s occurrence,” the release states.
“In that particular case we still conduct the investigation because there’s certainly a lot we can learn from it and also, we want to bring closure to the victim,” Merry said. “So we continue to conduct an investigation as if we were going to charge an individual and run it by the (District Attorney’s) office, just so you can call it what it is when you close it out.”
