Nick Chen scored two goals and set up another to lead the Portland Jr. Pirates to a 7-2 win over the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes, in round robin action at the USA Hockey U16 Tier II National Championships in Reston, Va., Wednesday.
Chen, a junior at Thornton Academy, scored 1:14 into the contest, lighting the fuse on a four-goal first period Pirates’ outburst
Biddeford’s Brady Fleurent capped the explosive stanza with an unassisted goal with 2:37 to play.
The Jr. Pirates took a 6-2 lead in the third, before Eric Grover of Biddeford capped the scoring with 5:02 left in the game.
Action was slated to continue this morning, with the Jr. Pirates scheduled to face the Columbia (S.C.) Cyclones in day two of the week long tournament.
Dumoulin trip short, but sweet
The trip made last weekend to St. Louis by the parents of Boston College defenseman Brian Dumoulin was a little shorter and not as sweet as they had hoped.
Pete and Deb Dumoulin of Biddeford made the junket to the Mound City for the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament, in hopes that the Eagles would advance to defend their Frozen Four championship.
Colorado College, however, upset Boston College 8-4.
“We had a good time in St. Louis despite the game Friday night and the snow on Saturday there.” said Deb. “We enjoyed spending time with the other parents. Not sure who I want to win this (Frozen Four).”
With Brian Dumoulin having earlier put to restthe question about his returning to BC next year for his junior season, his parents are already making plans to attend next year’s Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.
“That is the Frozen Four that I have dreamed of,” she said. “Ice and beach!”
Jr. Monarchs come oh so close to title
The New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs fell just short of capturing the Tier III Junior B National Championship, when they lost 3-2 in double overtime loss to the Boston Jr. Bruins, Tuesday, at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Mass.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by Kyle Lajeunesse, the son of former Biddeford High football standout Guy Lajeunesse.
The Bruins replied with two consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead, but with 12:08 gone in the second, Joe York of Kennebunk scored, tying the game 2-2.
Matt Crowley, formerly a student at Thornton Academy, assisted on York’s goal.
The stalemate continued until 9:42 of the second extra session, when Mike Weaver scored to give the Bruins their first-ever Junior B championship.
Biddeford man wins Pirates prize
John Baldinelli of Biddeford was the Mystery Puck grand prize winner Wednesday during the Southern Maine Heart Walk Kick-off Event at the Portland Pirates’ 2-1 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Civic Center in Portland.
Baldinelli won a team-signed American Heart Association-themed Pirates jersey during a special on ice contest during the second intermission. The Mystery Pucks sold out and $2,000 was raised for the American Heart Association.
