BIDDEFORD — The Waterhouse Field Commission and the City of Biddeford are really embracing the idea of “look good, feel good, play good” this summer.
This week, yet another renovation has begun at the historic stadium. This time around, it was to dig up to the old grass and prepare to lay down a turf surface.
This is just adding to list of upgrades Waterhouse Field has seen over the past couple years. The bleachers have been replaced, a new scoreboard has been put in, new fencing has been put up and new lighting has also been added to the field. Now, the last step is to put in the turf, according to Biddeford High School Athletic Director Dennis Walton.
“After the turf is installed, it is going to be more cosmetic things, but we are very excited to have a top of the line turf surface,” said Walton.
The goal of this latest renovation is to make Waterhouse Field a state-of-the-art facility that can be used by all athletic programs.
“(The coaches) are very, very excited about it. It is going to be a top-notch facility and it is going to be utilized by everyone,” said Walton. “One of the driving forces behind this was to ensure we had equity amongst our athletic programs.”
The installation of the turf surface is about all sports and it is an exciting time as fall approaches.
“This is a win-win for both male and female athletic programs across the board and the community as a whole,” said Walton.
Right now, a seat in the bleachers overlooks piles of dirt and construction equipment, but the vision is to have the turf down and ready for the fall season opener.
“The goal is for it to be done by game number one,” said Walton. “As for right now, we are expected to be on schedule.”
Once the turf is set, expect a lot of exciting games to be played at Waterhouse Field this fall.
