OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Marguerite E. “Peg” Townsend, 96, of Harmon Avenue, Old Orchard Beach, widow of Edward H. Townsend Jr., died Thursday, September 1, 2016, at her residence.

She was born June 6, 1920, in Lewiston, a daughter of the late Earl E. and Luvia Ryley Pratt. Her foster parents were the late J. Bearl and Flora Flewelling.

She was educated in Auburn schools until the age of 10, and graduated from Washburn High School.

In the early 1950s, Peg owned and operated the Old Orchard Beach Taxi Co. in Old Orchard Beach. She later owned and operated a restaurant on Washington Avenue. For several years, she was employed by Ray Lord the Florist in Saco, as well as Hannaford at Five Points in Biddeford.

Her husband of 50 years, Edward Jr., died June 9, 2008.

She is survived by: a son, Lawrence E. Googins of Old Orchard Beach; three step-sons, Edward Googins and his wife Becky of Portland, David Googins of Sanford, and Ralph Peters and his wife Priscilla of East Hartford, Connecticut; three sisters, Muriel Johnson of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Marilyn Sawyer of Presque Isle, and Patricia Isner of West Virginia; a brother, Kenneth Flewelling of Willow, Alaska; and a foster granddaughter, Susan Hobson.

There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery, 86 Stanley Road, Springvale. Rev. Burton Howe will officiate.
