KENNEBUNK — Palene E. “Polly” Hickey, 91, of Kennebunk, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a period of failing health.

Polly, as she was known to all who knew her, was born June 29, 1927 in Biddeford, the daughter of Jere and Blanche Cantara Small, and is a graduate of Biddeford High School. She then graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing with an RN.

Polly worked for her husband Vincent for much of her career.  She also worked as a nurse at Memorial Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire for several years and briefly served as the Public Nurse for Biddeford.

Polly loved her family, and always tried to make her home a place of comfort for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and to follow their activities as much as she could.  She was an avid skier and she and Vin regularly traveled to different ski locations throughout the country, often with her grandchildren.  She enjoyed travel, especially to San Francisco and to New Orleans with its Jazz music.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Vincent J Hickey, MD, who died in 2008; her brother Eugene “Buddy” Small, who died in 1962; and her sister Barbara Dodge who died in 1993.

Survivors include her son Neil Hickey of Scarborough, Neil’s wife Patricia, her son Peter Hickey of Jackson, New Hampshire; a nephew Brent Small of Kennebunk; a niece Barbara Small Prunty of District Heights, California; grandchildren Christopher Small of Buxton; Kathryn Fantoli and her husband Rick of Sterling, Connecticut; and Joseph Small and his wife Kelsey of Chelsea; five great-grandchildren; and her dog Ollie.

A private graveside service will be held at her family plot in Laurel Hill Crematory, Saco.
