Thumbs up to the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for doing its due diligence in finding a use for the buildings on its recently acquired Timber Point property. While there are a lot of ideas and options, thoroughly vetting all of them will hopefully lead to the best possible outcome for the buildings ”“ one of which is a home designed by Charles Ewing, who lived there with his wife, Louise Parsons Ewing.
We hope people will let the refuge know what they’d like to see for this property by calling 646-9226, emailing rachercarson@fws.gov, visiting www.facebook.com/RachelCarsonNWR or sending mail to: 321 Port Road, Wells, ME 04080. Tours of the property are also hosted on Fridays and Sundays at 8 a.m. in the summer. Those wishing to participate should meet at the trailhead off Granite Point Road in Biddeford.
Thumbs up to the young woman and Good Samaritan who were able to avoid an abduction last week in Sanford. An 18-year-old woman was walking along Eastern Avenue around 9 p.m. on July 26, when a man tried to drag her into his car, according to police. She wrestled with the man, and a man walking his dog yelled at the would-be abductor, which was enough to spook him into retreating. This should serve as a warning to women, who need to be prepared for such situations. The young woman bravely fought off her attacker, doing everything she could to stay out of his vehicle, which could have saved her life. Despite concentrated investigative efforts, police had not announced an arrest as of press time today, but they did release a description and composite image, which were both printed in this newspaper, and are available online at www.sanfordpd.com. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police at 324-9170, ext. 220 or ext. 226.
Thumbs down to the news that Sanford Downtown Legacy had to lay off its executive director and close its Main Street office, in addition to the news that Summah Daze was recently canceled. In an effort to remain in existence, SDL must regroup, and board members say they are looking at transitioning to the Maine Downtown Network, which promotes downtowns on a smaller scale. The fate of Harvest Daze remains in question, but board members said they also hope to have a scaled-down fall festival. We hope SDL is able to regroup or merge its effort and volunteers with another group to continue the work of promoting the city’s downtown.
Thumbs up to twins Alex and Erik Villandry, of Biddeford, who helped save a man’s life recently. The young men were enjoyed an afternoon at Saco when two swimmers signaled they were in distress. It turned out the woman trying to get someone’s attention was signaling for help for her husband. The brothers took action, swimming out to the man and helping him to shore. Once on land, rescue personnel took over, but without their help, it may have been a different story.
