As the legendary Yogi Berra once famously quipped, “it feels like deja-vu all over again” when reading your front page story on Wells Warriors, March 4, only this time around, it makes even less sense than the last time.
According to Websters dictionary, “warrior” is a noun, often attributive: a person who fights in battles and is known for having courage and skill.
I see no mention of race, ethnicity or gender, so it should be a non-issue on that point alone. There is no Indian mascot running around at games, and no Indians in the logo or on uniforms, with the possible exception of the one on the soon-to-be-replaced school gym. There have been no complaints from local Native Americans or anyone else, other than the same couple who bring these complaints around every time who live in other areas of Maine ”“ same as what happened in Sanford a couple of years ago.
According to your article, one person is quoted as saying, “There are 29 schools in Maine that have stopped this.” I would respectfully ask him to name the 29, and what offensive names and mascots were changed. How many were “Warriors”?
Wells, I hope you show some warrior spirit by having the courage and skill to not give in to this flimsy attempt at political correctness.
Enough is enough.
