Thumbs up to all those who showed their Irish spirit by attending St. Patrick’s Day events. Whether it was a corned beef dinner or attending a performance of Irish dance, many Mainers mark the annual occasion to celebrate their Irish heritage ”“ whether real or adopted for the day. An extra thumbs up should go to the Maine Irish Heritage Center and the Irish American Club of Maine for sponsoring a whole slew of events over the weekend and this morning. The St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebration kicked off on Saturday night with dinner, dancing and music, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday is a great display of Irish-American pride. The flag-raising over Portland’s Harbor View Memorial Park this morning was a great way to wrap up the weekend, and if you haven’t gotten to it yet, there’s likely a green beer topped with a shamrock still available at the local Irish pubs and restaurants. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Thumbs up to all of the volunteers and supporters who keep Save Haven Humane Society in Wells going. The humane society hosted an event last weekend to showcase all its animals ready and awaiting adoption. At the event were pets like Murphy, a black cat who was rescued and ended up at Safe Haven. The collar Murphy was wearing when he was found was embedded in his neck, and thanks to Safe Haven, it was surgically removed. Safe Haven is a volunteer-run organization that takes in stray and surrendered cats that will be prepared for adoption. It’s a no-kill shelter, and volunteer Judi Wyland said at the event, “Our guys don’t get put down, ever, ever, ever. I always say it’s the lucky ones that come to us.” We salute the many people who volunteer their time to take care of rescued animals, with this organization and others, and all those who offer financial support to the many shelters and programs doing this good work.
Thumbs down to the lack of support for Waterboro’s Old Home Days. After putting out the call for help, only one person responded, volunteer committee members said. The annual summer festival has been a staple in the community for 27 years, said committee member Cindy Durney, but the work has become too much for the four people who have committed their time and efforts to making the event an annual success. We hope committee members are right that people will miss the festival, and volunteers will come forward to get Old Home Days back up and running again for 2015. The lack of the festival is sure to be felt by summer residents and year-round residents alike once they realize the parade, fireworks and fair favorites will not be taking place this year.
Thumbs up to all of the AARP Tax Aide program volunteers for taking time to assist others in filling out and filing their tax forms. It can be a difficult process, and for those who don’t use or have access to a computer regularly, filing online can be particularly challenging. Many volunteers take the training course and then spend their time at local libraries crunching numbers to help elderly and low-income area residents get this important annual deed done. Thanks again, to all those who lend a helping hand to those in need.
