SCARBOROUGH — After winning 15 games in a row, the Scarborough girls basketball team looked like they would capture the Class AA South championship last year, but Gorham ended up securing the title and heading to the state championship for the third straight time.

This year, Scarborough head coach Mike Giordano and the Red Storm have their sights set on a return trip to the Class AA South final — and this time they are focused on finishing the job.

“Our goal is to get back (to the regional championship) and maybe win that one more game. We’re returning a lot of players, but so are some of the other teams that will be competing against,” said Giordano.

Senior captain Josie Couture believes Scarborough can get the job done.

“I’m really excited. I think we have a lot of talent this year. We have really strong upperclassmen players and we also have a lot of new talent coming in,” said Couture.

The team lost five seniors to graduation, but the Red Storm believe they can simply reload this season.

“We lost some really good players. We’re going to miss them, but I think we’re really optimistic going forward. We’re all stepping up to fill their roles. I think we’re going to have a good season,” said Couture.

Giordano will rely heavily on Couture and three other returning players to create another winning streak.

“Senior captain Josie Couture, junior Bella Dickinson, junior Madison Blanche and junior Julia Freeman can all score the basketball which gives us a chance to get up into the mid-40s and 50s with a great chance to be successful,” said Giordano.

Scarborough fans should expect to see the Red Storm get up and down the floor this season.

“Our strengths are quickness and athleticism. We’re not very big, but we’re quick,” said Giordano.

Couture agreed with her coach.

“I think we mesh really well. We have some really good shooters on offense. We’re all hard workers so I think we’ll be solid on defense, too,” said Giordano.

Scarborough will host Sanford for the season opener at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

“We played (Sanford) three times last year and they returned pretty much the same group back. We beat them all three times, but they played us tougher each time we played them. I expect we’ll be ready to go. We want to get off on the right foot so it’s an important win if we can get it,” said Giordano.
