I was one of the runners in this year’s Boston Marathon, granted an invitational entry by the BAA based on my experiences as a spectator near the finish line last year.

I ran once before, for a charity, in 2012. The experience this year was like no other race I have completed in my nine years of running.

But my real reason for writing this letter is to say thank you to a special woman, known to me only as Melissa G. from Saco, who made the scarf I received as part of the Old South Church’s Marathon Scarf Project. I don’t know if this was the only scarf Melissa made or if she made several, but the one I received is a beautiful, royal blue and yellow creation, and the design in the blue sections looks like hearts.

I walked down to the Old South Church on the Friday before the marathon, after leaving the Expo at the Hynes Convention Center, and found numerous people from the church with scarves draped over them, letting runners choose whichever one they wanted. It was hard to choose, but as soon as I saw the one Melissa made, I knew it was the one I was meant to have.

I wore it proudly for the rest of the day and will treasure it always. I don’t know how else to reach you, Melissa G., so I hope you see my letter. If anyone reading this knows Melissa G., please be sure she sees this.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
