SACO — Lionel A. Chevalier, 92, of Camp Ellis, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Seal Rock Healthcare Facility in Saco.

Lionel was born on March 29, 1922 in Sanford, a son of Amie and Rose (Cote) Chevalier.

He was educated in the Sanford school system.

He served his country during World War II in the Navy Seabees, receiving the World War II Victory medal, the American Theatre medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre medal and the Philippine Liberation medal.

Lionel was employed by New England Shipbuilders Corporation for many years, working on the Littleton dam in Littleton, N.H. and the St. Lawrence Seaway in New York. Later, he was employed as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 20 years, retiring in 1974.

During his retirement, he enjoyed going lobstering at Camp Ellis, playing cribbage, tying flies, fishing, playing golf, woodworking and playing darts.

Lionel was a parishioner of the former Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco. Lionel was a member of the Saco Eagles, a lifetime member of the Biddeford Saco Lodge of Elks and a lifetime member of the VFW in Sanford.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Theresa Regis Chevalier, who passed away on Dec. 17, 1997; two sisters, Doris Bilodeau and Beatrice Cote; as well as his brother, Conrad Chevalier.

Lionel is survived by: three sons, Richard Chevalier and his partner Denise Brisebois of Sanford, Gerard Chevalier and his wife Paula of Saco and Roger Fournell and his wife Sandra of Biddeford; his daughter, Sylvia Neault and her husband Richard of Waterboro; two sisters, Gertrude Lapierre of Sanford and Jeannette Whitten Houle and her husband Richard of Englewood, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lionel’s family would like to thank Michelle and her staff at Seal Rock for the wonderful care they provided.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.
