CARIBOU – A North Waterboro woman was injured on Sunday when the snowmobile she was operating struck the rear of another on the ITS 90 trail in Caribou.
Maine Warden Service Lt. Dan Menard said Cindy McGriff, 53, of North Waterboro was treated and released from Cary Medical Center.
McGriff ran her sled into the rear of a snowmobile operated by Ben Colomb, 55, of Waterboro.
Menard said Colomb was not injured.
Both were headed east on ITS 90 when the mishap occurred while the two were crossing a bridge at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The mishap was one of several involving snowmobiles over the weekend, including two fatalities.
“ With several snowmobile crashes reported this weekend Maine Game Wardens urge the snowmobiling public to operate at a reasonable and prudent speed, obey all of Maine’s snowmobile laws, and be mindful of others using the trail systems,” said Menard.
Gracie Herrick Onofrio, 52, of Norway was operating a snowmobile on a road in Norway at about 3:35 p.m. Saturday when she hit a snowbank and was thrown from her sled. A second snowmobile from the same party struck her.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, Menard said.
Several hours later, Troy Marden, 17, of Amesbury, Massachusetts, and a friend were riding their snowmobiles on a plowed section of Thompson Lake in Poland when Marden failed to negotiate a corner, struck a snowbank and was ejected from the snowmobile.
The operator of the second snowmobile attempted to render aid to the victim before going to get help. Marden was pronounced dead at the scene.
