SANFORD — Larry Dion, 53, of Sanford, died on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Mass General Hospital, following a long illness.

Larry was born on Dec. 31, 1960 in Sanford, to Donald Joseph and Stella Christine (Allaire) Dion.

He grew up in Springvale and attended Notre Dame Parochial School and then went on to graduate from Sanford High School in 1978.

He joined the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power Program, and then attend the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1984. He then attended the Defense Language Institute in 1985 and the National Cryptologic College at NSA in 1990. He left the service to pursue an MBA in marketing and finance studies at John Hopkins University.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the AMVETS Club, and was also a member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers.

He had a strong interest in international affairs, government policies, business relationships and current affairs. He loved to travel and visited more than 35 countries during his lifetime. He was an avid reader, especially of inspirational, non-fiction and “how-to” books.

His parents, Donald and Stella Dion, preceded him in death.

He is survived by: a son, Jason Tax of Redding, California; two sisters, Susan Mrazik and her husband Dale of Acton and Rachel Bijaczyk and her husband Drew of Manville, New Jersey; a nephew, Scott Mrazik; and nieces, Erica Mrazik and Sarah Bijaczyk.

He will be loved and remembered by family and friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Notre Dame Church, 10 Payne St. in Springvale, at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2014. Burial will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 83 Stanley Road in Springvale, immediately following. A luncheon will follow at the St. Ignatius Parish Hall, Riverside Avenue in Sanford.
