ACTON — Donald Dean “Don” Gilbert, of Acton, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 in Jackson, New Hampshire.
Don was born on May 24, 1945 in Omaha, Nebraska, to the late Max Wilson Gilbert and Thelma Pearl Gilbert.
He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in education.
He moved to Maryland in 1968 to accept a teaching position in Salisbury, Maryland.
After getting married, Don moved to La Plata, Maryland, where he raised his two children.
Don was employed by Calvert County Public Schools, where he worked until his retirement in 1998. After retiring, he moved full time into his summer home on Mousam Lake in Acton. He enjoyed “lake life” with daily canoe rides and naps on the hammock overlooking the lake. He enjoyed all the seasons in Maine, taking regular drives to mountains to hike or ski and the ocean to enjoy the views. He enjoyed traveling and would take frequent trips to visit his children, mother, brothers, nieces and nephews.
Don is survived by: his children, Julie Marie McBride and husband Bill and James Wilson Gilbert and wife Donna; five grandchildren, Ashley and Hannah McBride, and Matthew, Alex and Abby Gilbert; mother, Thelma Gilbert; and brothers, Harvey Gilbert, Richard Gilbert and Dennis Gilbert.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, located at 580 Main St. in Springvale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3 at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale. Interment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery in Springvale. Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
