A Providence, R.I., woman was seriously injured when the car she was driving slammed into the side of a tractor-trailer truck at 7pm Sunday tonight in the southbound lanes of the Maine Turnpike in Kennebunk.
Janet Grewer, 61, was driving her 2005 Saab sedan on an undersized spare tire when she lost control where the road shifted from smooth to uneven pavement. The car slid into the side of the 2008 Freightliner, smashing against the spare tire carriage, which damaged the car but also kept it from being completely run over by the truck, said Trooper Phil Alexander.
Grewer was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters. She was taken to Maine Medical Center in serious condition. Her husband, John, was not injured.
The Saab ended up on the southbound exit ramp leaving all three travel lanes clear so there was not a significant impact on the heavy Sunday evening traffic headed south, Alexander said.
