BANGOR — The search for the University of New England football program’s first win will continue after the Nor’easters dropped a 34-21 decision to the Husson University junior varsity team on Sunday afternoon in Bangor.

UNE is scheduled to play a season’s worth of games against collegiate junior varsity programs and prep schools prior to starting its full varsity schedule and membership in Commonwealth Coast Football in 2018. The Nor’easters dropped their season opener by a 36-30 count at Curry College on Sept. 2.

Brian Peters led the way for the Nor’easters on Sunday, going 10-of-16 for 148 yards passing and a connection with former Biddeford High School standout Austin Dutremble for a 29-yard score. Parker Belsky paced the team on the ground with five carries for 10 yards, while Jack Mahoney and Peyton Phillips both found the end zone on short-distance runs. Ryan Gaboury reeled in eight receptions and racked up 151 yards stretching the field.

On defense, Nick Scarfo had a team-high 11 tackles. Kennebunk graduate Patrick Saunders and Wells native Owen Berry both finished with 10 tackles on the day. Scarfo and Bradley Conha registered one sack apiece, while Mitchell Hennings forced a fumble and Ben Howell pulled down an interception.

The Nor’easters are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel up to Northfield, Vt. to take on the JV squad at Norwich University.
