OOB resident fond of St. Luke’s chapel

In June 1971, the Catholic Bishop at the time dedicated St. Luke’s Chapel Saco Ave. Old Orchard Beach. Rev. James J. Mullen, fourth degree assembly Knights of Columbus “Honor Guards,” escorted the bishop before and after he celebrated the dedication Mass.

Faithful navigator Conrad Boidvert, Purser Oscar Nollete and Comptroller Lewis Fowler presented the “Papal Flag” with stand for the chapel to pastor and assembly’s Friar Rev. John H. Clancy after the dedication. Sir Knight Charles Beaudoin was the “Papal Flag” committee chairman. The flag was donated by the assembly’s membership.

As past head usher at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, I can say there was standing room only during the summer months for many years at St. Luke’s chapel Masses.

On Oct. 4, 2003, Rev. Coleman O’Toole and Deacon Dan held “Blessing of the Animals” on the Feat of St. Francis at St. Luke’s. My toy poodle and my cat were blessed.

I will always remember St. Luke’s chapel. Many church activities happen there, including our church choir concerts.
