The Scarborough boys’ indoor track and field team won its first state title three years ago, but today it is going for its third in four years.

“I think we have a lot more chances to score in different events this year. Last year, we had a lot of seniors who were top seeds,” said Red Storm Coach Derek Veilleux of the defending champions.
The Class A state meet begins at 10 a.m. today at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. The Class B meet starts at 10 a.m. at Bates College in Lewiston.
Scarborough is seeded first with a deep team led by top-ranked pole vaulter Alec James. The Red Storm also have Nick Morris back from an injury. While he won’t show his state-title form in the 800, he will be an asset on the relays.
The Class A girls’ meet will be contested by Bangor, Brunswick and Scarborough, which has won seven straight titles.
“They might not get a whole bunch of firsts, but they will second, and third you to death,” said Gorham girls’ coach John Caterina, who has the meet’s likely MVP in multievent star Sarah Perkins.
In Class B, York’s boys are going for their first state title as the top seed. Seniors Tyler Martin and Thomas Reid, who both run the hurdles and dominate the jumping events, are the leaders.
York’s best finish was third in 2006, and the Wildcats placed fourth last year.
Still, Coach Ted Hutch won’t talk about the title.
“We are approaching the state meet just like any other: eat well, sleep well, practice smart, and prepare for each event. Our kids are working hard and staying focused,” Hutch said.
Waterville and its talented sprinters should dominate the girls’ Class B state meet, however the Greely girls also will vie for the title.
The Rangers have won 13 Class B titles and this year are led by sophomore distance standout Kirstin Sandreuter, who is ranked second in the 2-mile and mile.
