Marjorie DeSanctis, a Scarborough Democrat, has announced that she’ll challenge state Rep. Heather Sirocki, a Republican, for the District 28 seat in the Maine House of Representatives this fall.

Sirocki will be seeking her fourth and final term in the House and said this week that she finds serving Scarborough in Augusta “rewarding and interesting (as I) dig into the issues, read the fine print and work with my legislative colleagues to find common sense solutions.”

District 28 covers the western and southern portions of Scarborough.

DeSanctis is running against Sirocki because, “I have watched for several years as the policies in Augusta have hurt Scarborough and I felt compelled to do something about it.”

DeSanctis said that if elected her goal would to be to “redirect (the Legislature’s) focus to how we can improve conservation planning, support education and strengthen local communities.”

She added, “We cannot (allow) the state to continue to impose mandates that stretch our local budgets further each year. Scarborough’s families are hard-working people who deserve a stronger voice in Augusta – one that speaks to their values and their interests.”

DeSanctis, who is now retired, specialized in health-care finance during a long career that saw her working at hospitals in Bangor, as well as at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She is also a fellow with the Healthcare Financial Management Association, having served as president of the Maine Chapter. DeSanctis has also taught project management and strategic planning courses at the University of New England, which has campuses in Biddeford and Portland.

She graduated with honors from Husson College and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in finance. DeSanctis is also active in the community, including service on the board of directors for Camp Ketcha.

During her time in the Legislature, Sirocki served two terms on the Health and Human Services Committee and she currently serves on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee

She said the job of a legislator involves three basic things – making new laws, amending existing laws and repealing laws that are no longer needed. Sirocki described the Maine House of Representatives as “a large and lively body.”

And he added that, “I am a people person at heart and I very much enjoy meeting, listening to and speaking with my constituents, many of whom have strong opinions and interesting perspectives” on issues.

Sirocki said one of the pieces of legislation she’s most proud of includes a first-in-the-nation law that allows residents to opt out of smartmeter installation, but also said, “I am most proud of being able to help individuals from my district and others from around the state. Their trust in me, their smiles and their words of thanks mean the world to me.”
