The Lake Region girls’ basketball team won both of its games last week, defeating Greely, 57-49, last Friday and Freeport, 65-33, Saturday. Both games were at home.
The Lakers (11-1) only loss of the season came in December at Greely (9-3). They trailed, 12-5, after the first quarter Friday, but the Lakers rebounded to lead at the half.
Freshman Christina Ricci scored a game-high 15 points, 13 of which came in the second quarter. Z.Z. Leighton added 14, with nine coming from the foul line.
Lake Region made 27 of 40 free throws in the game.
Ricci led all scorers with 11 against Freeport (2-11), while tallying eight rebounds and four steals. She was the only scorer in double digits for the Lakers, whose balanced offense saw 13 different players score.
The Bonny Eagle girls were beaten by Noble on Friday night, 48-44, and then lost a Saturday afternoon matinee to Deering, 54-35. It was the third straight loss for the Scots.
On Friday, the game was tied at 44-44 late in the fourth when Noble’s Alyssa Stokes sank a pair of free throws with just 16 seconds left. The Knights added two more insurance points to pick up the win.
On Saturday afternoon against Deering, the Scots fell behind early and were never able to catch up. Deering ran off a 14-9 first quarter thanks in large part to Nicole Garland’s three baskets from beyond the arc. Deering eventually pulled out to a 10-point lead at the break, 27-17.
In the second half, the Rams kept the host Scots at bay and they outscored Bonny Eagle, 27-18, over the third and fourth quarters. Kellsey Howes led Bonny Eagle with 12 points.
With the two losses the Scots find themselves at 7-6 and were ranked eighth in the latest West A Heal Point standings. They were scheduled to travel to Biddeford to take on the Tigers Thursday evening.
After getting its first win of the season, Windham has since dropped a pair of games, falling to Thornton Academy, 38-31, last Friday and Deering, 60-32, Tuesday.
