FREEPORT – The Freeport Town Council voted unanimously to accept the resignation of District 1 Councilor Sara Gideon on Oct. 23.
Gideon’s resignation came after she and her family moved out of District 1 into a home located in District 3 in Freeport earlier this month. Under the town’s charter, moving out of the district prevents Gideon from continuing to serve as a District 1 councilor.
Gideon may still continue to serve Freeport residents, as she is a candidate on the Nov. 6 ballot for the Maine House of Representatives District 106 seat.
At the Town Council meeting, Gideon said she was grateful for the opportunity to serve Freeport. “I wanted to thank the people of Freeport for allowing me the privilege of serving you on the town council.”
There is one year left on Gideon’s term. A special election to fill out the remainder of the term will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4 in the Freeport Town Hall from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Nomination papers will be available at the Town Clerk’s office beginning on Oct. 25 and they must be returned no later than 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8.
