CASCO – A Casco man was arrested Monday and charged with assaulting and strangling his girlfriend this weekend.

Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies arrested Matthew Peterson, 38, Monday afternoon on an arrest warrant for domestic violence assault stemming from an incident with his girlfriend Saturday. It is a class B offense. No bail is allowed on this charge, police said.

According a department press release, at around 1:50 Saturday, a deputy stopped to assist a disabled vehicle on Route 302 in Casco. The vehicle had run out of gas. The driver of the vehicle had reported that she had just been the victim of an assault and was trying to get to a friend’s house. The victim, Peterson’s longtime girlfriend, and their young son, had just left their home on Lakewood Road in Casco. The victim reported to the deputy that Peterson became angry and proceeded to strangle her after she returned home from an evening out with friends.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Team was utilized to execute the warrants as Peterson was known to be in possession of firearms and uncooperative with the police, the release said.
