Scarborough High School
2007 varsity spring sports preview
Baseball
Coach: Jim Cronin
Last year: The Red Storm finished the regular season with a 9-6 record and they entered the West A quarterfinals as the No. 5 seed. A tourney loss to Deering ended Scarborough’s season.
Players to watch: Seniors Kevin Chamberlain – P/1B/DH, Nate Boroyon – P/3B, AJ Ellison – OF/P, Aaron Rice – 3B/P, Ben Wahrer – 2B/P, Josh Larrabee – IF/C, Brian York – OF, Chris Albert – OF, Joey Passarelli – utility. Juniors Ben O’Connor – 1B/P, Craig Slavin – IF/P, Logan Oliver – OF/P, Zach Ware – C/3B. Sophomores Chris Bernard – C, Jimmy Rouse – SS/P.
Outlook: The Red Storm is led by senior captains Chamberlain, Boroyon and Ellison. Chamberlain is a four-year varsity starter and he’s described by his coach as “one of the best pitchers in the state.” Boroyon looks like the No. 2 pitcher in Scarborough’s rotation and Ellison will likely be the team’s closer.
“We are relatively inexperienced,” said Coach Cronin. “We lost 10 seniors from last year who played the majority of the innings. When Kevin is on the mound, we have a chance of beating anybody, but we will have to see which players rise to the top as the season progresses.
“From what I’ve seen so far this spring, the guys are willing to work hard and many of the players look like they are ready to step up and meet the challenge. We will focus on the fundamentals and try to take care of the little things this season and hopefully win some battles along the way.”
The Red Storm should again be in the tournament mix at season’s end.
Softball
Coach: Tom Griffin
Last year: The Red Storm ended the regular season at 15-1 and they were the top seed in the West A regional tourney. They knocked off Portland in the quarterfinal round before falling to Biddeford in an 11-inning semifinal. Scarborough was actually the last team to beat the eventual state champion Tigers when they topped Biddeford for the SMAA title.
Players to watch: Seniors – Captain Kelsey Griffin (P/SS), Captain Caitlin LeBorgne (P/SS), Captain Meaghan Myers (C), Victoria Joyce (OF), Raquelle Rinfret (3B), Caitlin Wright (OF), Ashley Thompson (OF) and Samantha Pelletier (1B). Juniors – Sarah Bonenfant (2B), Kira Gordon (OF) and Amanda Davis (OF). Sophomores – Catie Funk (3B) and Reegan Brackett (2B/OF)
Outlook: The Red Storm is ready to make another run at a regional crown. They have very good pitching and they’ll play well in the field. And their bats should provide enough offense to win the majority of their games.
“I believe we have the potential to have another good season,” said Coach Griffin. “We have strong pitching and defense with many good athletes. Our team speed has improved from last year and we have many capable hitters in the lineup.”
Scarborough is again considered one of the teams to beat in the Western Maine Class A ranks.
Boys lacrosse
Coach: Tobey Farrington (4th season)
Last year: The Red Storm won the Class A state championship by defeating Lewiston. It was the first year that Maine lacrosse teams played for two separate state titles – Class A and Class B.
Players to watch: Andy Clark (senior attack), Mike Hathaway (senior midfield), Phil Lambert (senior goalie), Drew Kirstein (senior defense), Brent Mayo (senior midfield), Ed Needham (senior defense), and Cody Powers (senior defense).
Outlook: The Red Storm will be a force again as they seek to defend their state title. Enough skilled veterans return to make Scarborough an early favorite to repeat.
“We have many experienced players returning,” said Coach Farrington. “Having lost several key players to graduation, our biggest challenge will be on offense. The defense will have to play well until the offense gets on track.”
Girls lacrosse
Coach: Marcia Wood enters her third season.
Last year: The Red Storm defeated Brunswick and won the Class A state championship.
Players to watch: Marisa Hebert (senior-center), Brittany Kane (senior-defense), Shealyn O’Donnell (senior-offense), Katie Snyder (senior-offense), Julia Pons (senior-defense), Andrea Shryock (senior-goalie), and Aubrey Wagner (junior-defense)
Outlook: Despite a sizeable loss to graduation, 15 quality seniors will provide the leadership for this season’s defending state champs.
“We lost a lot of last years’ starting line-up,” said Coach Wood. “We are just trying out different combinations to see what works for us on the field. The talent is there, we are just focusing on getting people comfortable with each other on the field and learning how to work together.”
Look for the Red Storm to be among the top teams again this season.
Boys tennis
Coach: Craig McDonald enters his seventh season
Last year: The Red Storm went 6-6 and saw their season end with a loss in the West A prelims.
Players to watch: Senior Ethan McElwain (doubles), sophomore Nick Tolman (singles), junior Nate Gove (doubles), senior Micah Abrams (singles), junior Ryan Eddy (doubles), and freshman Adam Saltz (singles).
Outlook: “We are a young, but balanced team this year,” said Coach McDonald. “The success for 2007 will depend on how quickly the younger players can develop.”
Girls tennis
Coach: Tracy MacNider
Last year: The Red Storm finished the year at 3-9.
Playing singles in 2006 were Kayla Goode, Allison Camore, and Sam Stone. Doubles pairings in 2006 included Kat McDonald and Melissa Freeman as well as Lindsey Libby and Amy Butarozzi.
Outlook: The Red Storm will look to improve their win total from a year ago. Getting into the tournament is a goal for every team in the region and the Red Storm will seek to qualify for the post-season after missing the playoffs a year ago.
Boys track
Coach: Derek Veilleux (5th year)
Last year: The Red Storm finished ninth at the Class A state championship.
Athletes to watch: Senior Ben Talbot (distance), senior Taylor Burns (racewalk), junior Scott Delano (relays/mid-distance), junior Ben Violette (distance), sophomore Sam Chick (hurdles/jumps), and sophomore Brad Nakanishi (pole vault).
Outlook: “We will have an extremely young team this year,” said Coach Veilleux. “Out of 40 guys, only four are seniors. We will have our share of athletes that will compete at a high level during the
conference and state competitions. And performing well as a team at the conference and state championships is always our goal.”
Girls track
Coach: Ron Kelly
Last year: The Red Storm won the SMAA conference meet and the Class A state championship.
Athletes to watch: Seniors – Kaitlynn Saldanha (racewalk, 800 and relays), Erica Jesseman (1600, 3200 and relays), Allison Chamberlain (400 and relays), Melissa Anson (middle distance), Mallory Gordon (pole vault), Hilary Curtis (800 and relays), Alexandra Hoy (sprints, relays), Ariana Bratt (middle distance).
Juniors – Annie Mills (hurdles, relays), Devon Leighton (pole vault, triple jump, 400), Sarah Gordon (pole vault),
Outlook: Everyone’s chasing Scarborough. The Red Storm seem to have enough depth and enough talent to win another Class A state crown.
“We graduated some valuable field event points, but we have an experienced group back from last year,” said Coach Kelly. “(We’re trying to) develop some young throwers to help the team.”
Kelly expects Thornton, Gorham, and Brunswick to beat among their top competitors this year.
