Raymond residents will have another opportunity to shape the school budget next week after rejecting the School Board’s first proposal at the polls on June 10.

A special town meeting will be held Friday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jordan Small Middle School to discuss and approve the school budget. A budget referendum vote will then be held Monday, July 7, with polls open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. at Jordan Small Middle School.

The original budget proposal, which kept down total spending but increased the town’s share by almost $1 million due to loss of revenues, was approved at the annual town meeting May 28. But changes to state law required for the first time a ratification vote at the polls, and on June 10 Raymond residents shot down the education budget 517-435.

The School Board and Budget Committee were scheduled to meet Wednesday night to discuss possible cuts to the budget. Selectmen are holding a meeting Friday morning to sign the warrant for the June 27 special town meeting.

Under state law, Raymond is required to hold a special town meeting within 10 days of the failed budget ratification. Then, another referendum vote must be held within 10 days of the town meeting.
