WESTBROOK – The Scarborough Red Storm’s Mike Cyr got the 2010-2011 wrestling season off to a great start on Saturday afternoon, capturing an individual championship at the Westbrook Invitational tournament held at Westbrook High School.
Massabesic won a very close battle for the team title with 149.5 points, just edging out Marshwood, which finished second with 148 and Mountain Valley rounded out the top three with 114. Cony placed fourth with 84 points, just ahead of fifth-place Mt. Ararat, which finished with 82. Westbrook’s “A” team was sixth with 75 points, Bonny Eagle was seventh with 57.5, Sanford was eighth with 46, Scarborough was ninth with 27.5, Cheverus was 10th with 21, Brunswick was 11th with 20.5, Deering was 12th with 20 and the Westbrook “B” team was 13th with 9 points.
Cyr provided the bright spot for the Red Storm, winning the individual championship in the 215-pound weight class. Cyr claimed his title by pinning Massabesic’s Josh Andrews at the 5:42 mark of their championship match.
The Red Storm wrestlers will be back on the mats on Dec. 18, as they will host Portland and Deering in a home meet at 5:30 p.m. Following that meet, the Storm will host Kennebunk and York on Dec. 22 at 6 p.m.
