The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners approved the 2006 county budget, based on the recommendations of County Manager Peter Crichton and his staff, at $29,809,865.

The 2006 budget represents a 2.1 percent increase to taxpayers and a mill rate of 56 cents. The majority of the county budget (58 percent, more than $16 million) goes to running the county jail, with only $800,000 coming from the state to offset those costs.

The county manager’s recommendations were presented to the budget advisory committee, consisting of nine representatives from county municipalities, and chaired by Portland Mayor James Cohen. The board voted unanimously to approve the manager’s recommended budget. Public meetings were then held in Scarborough, Portland, Naples and Freeport for review and discussion.
