This past week was Richard R. Lagarde’s last as finance director for the town of Standish. He recently resigned from his position to begin his new duties as treasurer of the City of Portland.

Legarde, a long-time resident of Biddeford, called Standish a “well-run municipality,” saying he will miss the “capable department heads” and “very engaged staff, councilors and budget committee members” he has interacted with during the past 18 months.

“Working here has been a joy,” he said. “The culture within the town hall is one that’s inviting and focused on customer service.”

Legarde came to Standish to fill a vacancy left by John Herald, who left unexpectedly after approximately two months in the position.

The finance director serves as the treasurer and tax collector, reporting directly to the town manager, which, in Standish’s case, is Gordon Billington.

Although he’s sorry to see him go, Billington said Lagarde’s new position is a great opportunity for him. He also praised Lagarde for the dedication and quality of work he has provided to the town.

“He’s served us really well over the past year and a half,” Billington said.

And, regarding his departure, Legarde summed it up this way:

“I feel like I’m kind of leaving my family.”
