Republican Gary Plummer retained his seat in District 111, covering part of Windham. He defeated Democrat Geoffrey Heckman 2,412 to 1,257.

“I am elated,” said Plummer upon hearing the news of his victory Tuesday night.

Plummer had nothing but praise for his opponent.

“We were both out there. I knocked on about 2,000 doors and he did as well. He worked very hard as did I.”

Plummer, who served 22 years as Cumberland County Commissioner, attributed his two-to-one victory margin to his experience and knowledge of Windham issues and people and his opponent’s status as political newcomer.

“It’s difficult for someone who doesn’t have the roots and contacts I have. But Geoff is just establishing himself. I’m sure we will see a lot more of him.”

Plummer may not see Heckman anytime soon, however. Because of the sound defeat, Heckman said he would probably not run for Plummer’s seat until Plummer is termed out in six years.

“I knew it would be an uphill battle,” Heckman said. “Windham is a conservative town; look at how the vote went. They voted for Woodcock and TABOR. I think Gary is pretty safe in his seat for at least a few more years.”
