It’s always tough to win on the road in any sport and at any level. The Lake Region girls basketball team found that out last week as they dropped their first game of season at Fryeburg on Saturday.

The Raiders used an 18-8 fourth quarter run to break open what had been a very close game and take a 44-38 win. Lake Region had a 30-26 lead entering the final period, but they were unable to slow the Raiders over the last eight minutes of play.

Renee Nicholas led the Lakers with a game-high 15 points. Kristi Leach pitched in with six points and Abby Hancock and Meaghan Craffey both scored five.

The Lakers did hold on to score a 47-36 win at Wells on Thursday, Jan. 3. The Warriors led after one quarter, 11-6, but the Lakers took control with a strong second quarter that saw them overtake Wells for a 20-16 halftime lead.

Lake Region held off the pesky Wells squad in the second half with solid defense and good foul shooting as the Warriors put the Lakers on the line to try and get back into the contest.

Erica Webb had a team-high 10 points followed by Renee Nicholas with nine, Chelsea Meyers with eight, and Kristi Leach with seven.

The Lakers traveled to Greely on Wednesday evening and they’ll host unbeaten Falmouth on Saturday.
