Try the Y for free
From Sept. 22-Oct. 3, all four branches of YMCA of Southern Maine (Pineland, New Gloucester; Casco Bay, Freeport; Greater Portland, Portland; and Northern York, Biddeford) are opening their doors to the public to try out for free what is offered. This includes exercise classes, gym and weight rooms, pools, etc.
This is being to done to encourage the public to make use of the Y’s programs and services to achieve better health and well being. Anyone who becomes a member of the Y by Oct. 13 goes into a drawing for a year’s free membership.

TV producer to speak at SPArC event
Hosted by Saint Joseph’s Art Department, the fall 2014 Speakers, Performers, Artists, and Culture (SPArC) lecture series begins on Sept. 25 when film and television writer and producer Jeff Kline visits campus for a 6 p.m. talk about his work.
Kline whose portfolio includes primetime and daytime television, motion pictures, and online content is credited with more than 40 live-action and animated series and pilots, including the Daytime Emmy Award-winning show Transformers Prime, That was Then, and a host of animated series.
Kline’s presentation will be held in room 128 of Harold Alfond Hall at Saint Joseph’s campus in Standish. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Climate march solidarity
A group of Lakes Region residents plans to show its solidarity with the People’s Climate March in New York City, on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at two locations: the traffic light in Bridgton at routes 302 and 117; and the bridge at the causeway in Naples.
Transportation volunteer needed
The American Cancer Society’s Cumberland County unit is in need of a coordinator to oversee the free transportation program, Road to Recovery.
Responsibilities include receiving requests for local cancer patients needing transportation, contacting and assigning volunteer drivers to fulfill those requests, and maintaining accurate records for volunteer drivers. Society staff will serve as a resource to the Road to Recovery coordinator.
