Do you think Maine’s Sexual Offender Registry should be taken off the Internet?
Rynee Hascall, 39, Standish
“No. The pros outweigh the cons. We can’t change everything just because of one mistake. However, the site should be modified so we can tell what their crime was. It could be a person who went out with a girl consensually, or it could be a child molester. We need to know the difference.”
Pamela Yeats, 37, Windham
“Not off-line but maybe minor offenses shouldn’t be listed. Seems there should be some sort of limit so we’re not invading people’s ability to rehabilitate.”
Amanda Arsenault, 23, Windham
“The people in these communities have a right to know who’s living next door. And we should be able to use any and all available means, including the Internet, to know who these predators are. Nobody wants to be a crime victim.”
Granville Mitchell, 59, Gray
“Yes. It does more harm than good. I understand people really want to know about these people but someone can be on the registry without being a danger to society. And once they’re on the registry, they themselves are in danger.”
Ellis Kennie, Sr., 83, Windham
“Yes, it should be taken off-line if it’s going to kill people. It killed two people last week. The man had no right to kill those two people and it wouldn’t have happened had it not been for the Web site.”
Kathy Martin, 48, Naples
“Yes. I feel privacy is everything. I work in a nursing home and confidentiality is most important. You don’t discuss other people’s personal lives unless they want you to know. If everyone knows what these sexual offenders did, they can never restart their lives.”
