Honoring Those Who Teach

Since 1999, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has annually recognized classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education. November 1 is the deadline for teacher nominations to the local VFW Post 10643. Anyone may nominate a teacher except if the teacher is a relative. In the competition, three teachers from each level (grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) are selected as national winners and each national award teacher winner will receive $1,000 and their school receives a $1,000 award. Indoor Yard Sale

Project Graduation 2014 Committee will hold an indoor yard sale and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Little Meeting House on Route 302, Windham.

Electronic Recycling

All towns can participate in the Electronic Recycling Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Windham Mall. Enter at Veterans Memorial Drive next to Friendly’s. The event is sponsored by Windham Hill UCC. Recycle TVs of all sizes, computer monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cell phones, cordless phones, VCR, DVDs, audio equipment, stereos, speakers, etc. No household appliances (stoves, refrigerators, microwaves). Donations accepted to cover cost of the event and to support the church missions.

Meet the New Library Director

All are invited to the welcoming reception for Jen Leo, Library Director, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 4-7 p.m. in the Windham Public Library meeting room. There will be light refreshments. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Windham Public Library.

Helping Those in Need

It’s never too late to start thinking of our Windham residents in need. As the temperature decreases, the need for warm clothing grows. The Windham Clothes Closet is accepting gently used winter clothing. The town also would like to remind its citizens and businesses that there is a small fund specific to helping Windham seniors with heating assistance. Donations are being accepted at the Family Resource Center and Town Hall. Thank you for helping to replenish this fund.

Democrats Meet

Windham Democratic Town Committee will meet on Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at Windham Town Hall, Conference Room No. 1. Note the change of location and date, due to Columbus Day. Contact Mark Bryant, WDTC Chair, with any questions at 892-6591.

Wheelchairs Needed

The Windham Loan Closet needs wheelchairs, particularly transfer chairs with the small wheels. If you have one you no longer need, call 892-1907 to arrange to have it delivered. Also looking for a vacuum cleaner to replace one that is no longer working. If you have one to donate, please call us. The Loan Closet is available to all area residents who need to borrow medical equipment.

Located at 221 Windham Center Road, it is staffed by volunteers and may be accessed by calling 892-1907.

Medicare and Benefits Seminar

On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday from Oct. 16 through Dec. 3, the Medicare Open Enrollment Period. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for the upcoming seminars or to make one-on-one appointments with Medicare Advocates at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will continue at the same times and location on first and third Tuesdays of the month in 2014. Chicken Pot Pie Supper

On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Knights of Columbus Council 10020 will hold a chicken pot pie supper from 5-6 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Hall, Route 302, North Windham. $9 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Tickets are sold at the door. Portions of the proceeds will benefit turkey baskets for people in the Windham area. The recent lobster dinner to benefit the Windham Food Pantry resulted in a donation of more than a ton of food and needed supplies to benefit Windham residents.

Digital Age Effects

“Public Broadcasting in the Digital Age,” will be held on Monday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Windham Public Library, Windham. Henry Laurence discusses how new media has changed the traditional press. The event is sponsored by the Raymond Village Library (655-4283), the Windham Public Library (892-1908) and the Sebago Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce through a partnership between the Mid-Coast Forum and the Maine Humanities Council.

Land Trust Meets

The annual meeting of Windham Land Trust is Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the library. Guest speaker will be Forrest Bell from the FB Environmental Consulting firm. He will be speaking on environmental planning, assessment, monitoring, mapping and restoration projects. The public is welcome. The land trust meets every month on the first Wednesday at the Windham Public Library.

Bean Supper

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the veterans of VFW Post 10643 and Field-Allen Post 148 American Legion will hold an old-fashioned bean supper at the Windham Veterans Center. Proceeds will benefit the Veterans Helping Veterans Fund. The supper will be preceded at 4:30 p.m. with a ceremony to recognize local businesses and individuals for their support over the past year. The supper will follow, from 5-6:30 p.m. Adults $8, children under 12 free. For more information contact Dave at 892-1306.
