At the fair

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals will have a booth at the Cumberland Fair, Sept. 21-27 in the Exhibition Hall, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. To help keep it staffed, volunteers are needed. Call Kathy at 892-3040 for more information. There is no selling – it’s an information booth.

Speakout

On Thursday, Sept. 25, Bill Diamond will host “Speakout” on Windham’s local Channel 7 at 7 p.m. The topic will be “Town volunteers and their importance.” Guests will be Donna Chapman and Bob Muir. You are welcome to call in with questions during the show at 892-0546. You are also welcome to come to the Windham Town office, Council Chambers, and be part of the audience.

Smith Cemetery Association

A notion of evil

The Windham Public Library has been selected by the Maine Humanities Council to offer “Let’s Talk About It,” a free reading and discussion group with copies of books available through the library. This program is provided by the Maine Humanities Council’s Maine Center for the Book in cooperation with the Maine State Library. The series is entitled “Detective Fiction in the 20th Century: a Notion of Evil,” and it begins on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6:15 p.m. at the library. There will be five sessions, with the last meeting on March 31, 2015. Books to be read and discussed in this series include: “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett and “A is for Alibi” by Sue Grafton. A scholar provided by the Maine Humanities Council will facilitate the discussions.

Veterans information

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, Veteran Service Officer (VSO) Matthew Haley will take over for VSO Jeff Smith at the Windham Veterans Center on the second and fourt Wednesdays of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Haley transferred to Maine from Denver two months ago and will be the VSO in the Portland office at the Stevens Avenue National Guard Armory. Notice of Land Trust annual meeting

The annual meeting of Windham Land Trust will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29 at the Windham Public Library. A review of the past years projects that were completed and what is planned for the following year will be held. Everyone is invited to attend and share ideas and interest.

Pot roast supper

The last Raymond Village Community Church pot roast supper for 2014 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the church. The menu includes pot roast and gravy, mashed potatoes, carrots, green beans, rolls, beverage and choice of apple crisp or gingerbread. $9 for adults, $5 for children under 12. The church is located in Raymond Village, at 27 Main Street.

Church supper

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Windham Hill UCC will serve a traditional roast beef supper from 5-6:30 p.m. at the church. $9 for adults, $5 for children under 12.

Lakes Region seniors

Lakes Region Senior Center will present a program on Monday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. from the Iris Network. The program will include information, tips and suggestions for eye care and for people who suffer from macular degeneration. The Senior Center is at White Rock Grange, 33 Wilson Street, Gorham. Refreshments will be served, and donations will be appreciated.

Free community meal

On Saturday, Oct. 4, a free community meal will be served from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Christ Chapel, Raymond. This is open to the surrounding communities, and all ages are welcome. The menu includes BBQ chicken, sweet potatoes, beef stew, salad, casseroles and desserts. Served continually, buffet style. Christ Chapel is at 37 Northern Pines Road, off Route 85 near Crescent Lake, Raymond.

Snow dance

Saturday, October 4, the Windham Drifters Snowmobile Club will be hosting a Wishing for Winter Snow Dance to kick off the busy fall prep and winter riding season. The Hurricanes will be providing the music to get you off your seat and on your feet. $10 per person. Cash bar. Silent auction.
