Coleman Findlay pitched six shutout innings allowing just one hit while striking out nine as South Portland defeated Sanford 2-1 on Saturday.
The Red Riots (2-2) took advantage of a two-run third inning and Findlay’s pitching to pick up their second straight win. The Riots added a run in the sixth before Chris Gorham came on to pitch the seventh inning. Gorham allowed one hit and one run, but closed the game out to pick up his first save.
Leading the way for the Riots on the offensive side was Jamie Boudreau who picked up two hits.
On Thursday, April 26, the Riots hosted Noble and came away with a 9-4 win. Starting pitcher Josh Garneau earned the win and helped his own cause with a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
The Riots jumped all over Noble starter Ryan Lefebrve with four runs in the first inning. The Knights did pull within a run before Garneau’s homer made it a three-run cushion for the Riots.
The Red Riots were scheduled to travel to Standish to take on Bonny Eagle on Tuesday.
Red Storm start week at 1-2
The Scarborough baseball team could not overcome a 10-run second inning by Marshwood and the Red Storm fell to the Hawks, 12-6, last Thursday.
Scarborough took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first and led 2-1 when the Hawks exploded in their half of the second inning.
Earlier in the week, it was the Red Storm batters who had their hitting shoes on as who was putting on as they came away with a 7-1 win over Massabesic on Tuesday, April 24. Starting pitcher Kevin Chamberlain tossed a three-hitter and allowed just one run.
Chris Albert and Logan Oliver provided the bulk of the offense for the Storm. Albert had three singles and two RBIs and Oliver added two hits and drove in three.
The Mustangs scored their lone run in the first inning before Chamberlain settled in and blanked them the rest of the way. Chamberlain picked up seven strikeouts in his seven innings of work.
Scarborough was scheduled to hit the road and take on Sanford on Tuesday.
Greely blanks Capers
The Cape Elizabeth baseball team met up with some strong pitching from Greely and lost a 3-0 decision on Wednesday, April 25. The Capers could only muster two hits against the Rangers’ Caleb Jordan who struck out 12 batters. Andrew Guay and Adam Danielson had Cape’s two hits.
The Rangers scored two runs in the first and another in the second, but that proved to be all they needed as the Capers were stifled by Jordan.
“Danielson, Pat Murphy and Zak Breed all played outstanding outfield defense to keep the game close,” said Cape coach Chris Hayward.
On Tuesday, April 24, the Capers faired much better picking up a 4-3 win over Yarmouth thanks to Andrew Guay’s two-run homer in the third. Guay was also the Capers only repeat hitter on the day.
Trailing 2-0 and with a man on base, Guay connected and tied the game with one swing. Yarmouth reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Cape tied it again in the bottom half.
In the bottom of the fifth the Capers grabbed the lead for good when a run scored on an error by the Clippers.
Cape pitcher Ryan Boyington allowed just four hits and struck out six to get the win.
Coach Hayward was especially pleased with the defense, which played solid errorless baseball.
Because of the recent rain, the Capers were scheduled to play four straight games this week starting on Tuesday with Lake Region.
