Red Storm take down Blazes
On Monday in Westbrook, Scarborough earned a hard fought 11-7 win over the Blazes in a battle for supremacy in Class A West girls’ lacrosse. The Red Storm’s Lindsay Hagerman led the way for the defending state champs with six goals and four assists.
Marissa Hebert added to the Scarborough total with two goals. Aubrey Wagner, Chelsea Barrett, and Ellie Morin each added a score as well.
“I thought Scarborough controlled the draw to possess the ball and that was the difference in the game,” said Westbrook coach Deb Henry. “Scarborough really took care of the ball in the last eight minutes to keep the ball out of our attack.”
The Blazes were able to spread the wealth on the offensvie side. Lauren Sawyer and Alexis Lodge each scored a pair of goals. Keelin O’Connor tallied her first of the season, and Heather Niehoff and Jalissa Bryant each had a goal. Alyssa McCarthy contributed an assist and Emily Wight chipped in with two assists.
“We improved since last game with our midfield transition,” said Scarborough coach Marcia Wood. “Aubrey Wagner, Brittany Kane, Natalie Cahoon, Lindsay Hagerman and Marisa Hebert all contributed to the midfield connections making great passes, catches and cuts.”
The Red Storm were able to keep Westbrook’s top players down, particularly in the case of top scorer Lauren Sawyer.
“Defensively Brittany Kane marked out Lauren Sawyer and had six caused turnovers and five ground balls,” said Wood. “Allie Reid and Cat Thorpe played great defensive each causing two turnovers. Marisa Hebert who plays center had nine draw controls. That helped us control the ball from the start.”
With the win, Scarborough improves to 5-2 on the year. They were scheduled to play on Wednesday against Cheverus. The Blue Blazes dropped to 5-2 with the loss and they were scheduled to face Gorham on Wednesday.
Capers look to extend streak
The Cape Elizabeth girls lacrosse team started the week with a modest two-game win streak following a 17-6 win over Freeport on Wednesday, May 9. Jill Smith, Claire Jackson and Haley Stanfield combined for 12 of the Capers’ goals. Smith scored five times, Jackson added four tallies and Stanfield contributed three goals.
The Capers were scheduled to host an always strong Waynflete team on Wednesday, May 16.
Noble tops Riots
Noble controlled play and they dominated on the scoreboard with a 16-8 win over South Portland on Monday in North Berwick. Sharon Johnson scored three goals to pace the Riots’ attack.
South Portland was scheduled to host Windham on Wednesday, May 16.
