South Portland’s 13- and 14-year-old baseball all-stars dropped a 4-0 decision to the host team, Freehold Township, N.J., Wednesday, but remain alive in the Junior League baseball east regional playoffs.
The guys started the double-elimination tournament by beating New Hampshire, 5-2, Saturday, and then topped Massachusetts, 8-7, two days later.
South Portland is scheduled to play again Thursday. The winner of the regional advances to the Junior League World Series, played in Taylor, Mich., which will include 10 teams from around the world.
Meanwhile, the Scarborough Junior League softball all-stars compiled a 3-2 mark in their east regional in Syracuse, N.Y., one win short of advancing to the next round of play.
“I’m proud of our success,” said manager Perry Pelletier. “We made a good showing, and we never gave up.”
The girls opened the tournament with an 8-3 loss to Rhode Island, but bounced back with wins over New York, 15-8, and Massachusetts, 7-1, before losing Tuesday to Maryland, 6-0.
Scarborough closed out their tournament run with a 17-3 victory Wednesday over New Hampshire. Abbey Pelletier went the distance for the win, striking out eight, in temperatures hovering in the mid-90s.
The offensive onslaught was led by Alexis Garrison (3-for-5), Jennifer Colpitts (2-for-2) and Emily Norton (2-for-3).
