The Scarborough High wrestling team keeps plugging away as the big end-of-season tournaments approach. The Red Storm’s dual meet record is 8-6 and their best place at any tournament this year was a fourth at the Bonny Eagle Classic.

“Tony Sciarra (fourth at states last year) has wrestled a lot at 112, and has lost real competitive matches to two of the top kids in the state, while winning all his other matches at 103,” said Scarborough coach Phil Hamilton.

Kenny Mancuso started at 152 pounds then dropped to 145. He placed fourth at the Wells Warrior Invitational and he’s now dropped to 140 for the remainder of the season.

Brandon Carroll was one match away from placing at regionals last year. “He’s very strong and athletic, and he missed some time due to a pre-season surgery,” said Hamilton.

All of Matt Darling’s wins have been by pin this year at 152 and Pat Kelly has suffered just one loss this season – wrestling on a limited basis because of injury and illness.

And sophomore Brian Smiley is “coming on strong” at 125 according to Hamilton.

“The fourth place finish at the Bonny Eagle tourney is the program’s highest ever,” said Hamilton. “The team is full of hard workers and have taken to the college style of wrestling that we are teaching. It’ll be 2-3 years before we can compete with the Bonny Eagles and Massabesic’s of the state. And the middle school program has 30 kids already enrolled in their program with the season looking to start in about a month.”
