It took until the last game of the season, but the Gray-New Gloucester Patriots (1-8) avoided an undefeated season with a 12-6 win at Poland (0-9) Saturday afternoon.
It was a hard-fought win for the Patriots, who were forced to go into overtime to get the win. Gray-New Gloucester sealed the win when Trevor McCutcheon scored on a 10-yard run.
The Patriots, who won the overtime coin toss, elected to start on defense. That decision proved fruitful, as the Knights fumbled on the first snap of the drive, giving the ball to the Patriots and setting-up the game-winning score.
The Patriots’ other touchdown came on a long 86-yard touchdown run by Taylor Valente in the first quarter.

Fryeburg Academy shuts out Lakers

While the Lake Region High School football team’s 2-7 record was not enough to qualify them for the Western Maine Class B playoffs, it still is an improvement over last year’s 0-9 season.
The Lakers ended the 2007 season last Saturday afternoon with a 32-0 loss on the road to Fryeburg Academy.
The Raiders (7-2) beat the Lakers on the strength of two rushing touchdowns by Preston Jones, who also threw for another score.
