Summer in full effect

Graduation and recognition ceremonies are over, school is out and summer has officially begun. Congratulations to all Lake Region graduates, especially Lake Region High School Valedictorian Sullivan Tidd and Salutatorian Harold Bracy.

The Blues Festival this past weekend looked to me, like the biggest one ever. Cars parked as far as the eye could see from the Causeway on Route 302 toward Bridgton. Rumor has it that they had to stop selling bracelets to get into venues. The beautiful weather certainly helped the event’s success. Lucky for organizers, Saturday, the biggest day of the event, was picture perfect, as Sunday was mostly a washout. Mainers deserve this respite from the awful winter and “spring” weather. Let the summer fun begin!

Kate Hall!

I have never talked about Lake Region High School track extraordinaire Kate Hall here. Everyone already knows Kate is the superstar athlete who breaks all kinds of records. Since Kate’s Lake Region High School career came to an end this year, I wanted to make sure I just said WOW. How amazing she is. Her diligence and hard work paid off, with a little help from her natural talent.

You know who Kate Hall is, but did you know that this week Kate set the record for the all-time best High School long jump at 22 feet, 4.5 inches, which she set at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.? This broke the record last set in 1976, 39 years ago. Did you also know that Kate is ranked 8th in the world? With this record-setting jump, Kate surpassed the qualifying jump for the 2016 Olympic Trials! Can’t wait for 2016.

Lake Region Community Theatre

Currently the group is performing “The Addams Family Musical” at Lake Region High School. I went to the show last weekend, and let me tell you, it is worth your time! The good news is they have more performances this weekend. This show is so fun and very well done. The songs are challenging vocally, but the cast masters the singing as well as the dancing and acting.

Shows are Friday and Saturday night at 7:30, with a matinee on Sunday. Tickets are on sale at the door or at Raymond Village Florist, Krainin Real Estate-Raymond. Naples Library, Casco Library, Hayes True Value, Bridgton Library, Books ‘n Things in Norway and Papa’s Floral and Gifts in Fryeburg.

Naples Lions Club Cruises on the Queen

The Naples Lions Club is holding three different Songo River Queen Cruises this summer, each one with a different theme of music. All cruises are on Saturday nights from 7:30-9:30 p.m. On July 11, country music takes center stage. If golden oldies are your speed, don’t miss the July 25 cruise. Finally classic rock will be playing on the Sept. 5 Labor Day weekend cruise. Tickets are available online at www.songoriverqueen.net. Tickets are $20 per person in advance, or $25 at the dock if available.

Ladies Who Lunch

The Naples-based Songo Garden Club enjoyed an amazing visit recently to Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. Nineteen members and guests (not sure they were all ladies!) toured the gorgeous farm, had a delicious lunch, and then were able to take a self-guided tour through, what else? The gardens!
