A job fair organized by the Westbrook Community Center is aimed at filling local positions with Westbrook residents and clients of the city’s General Assistance program.

Melissa Swett, who was hired recently as the city’s general assistance administrator and community outreach coordinator, said this week that she is organizing the event to give local businesses a chance to find “some great candidates for positions they are needing to fill,” as well as helping General Assistance clients to “have the opportunity to apply and hopefully find jobs.”

The job fair is Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Community Center Gym, and is open to the public.

While Swett said the fair is aimed the general public, she also thought it could be a great opportunity for some of her clients.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity for General Assistance clients to look for jobs, as well, and it is easier for people to come here that maybe do not have transportation to go to the other fairs that come up,” she said. “I have had some great feedback from clients that are happy we are having it here because they physically couldn’t get into Portland or surrounding areas. Also, it is great to bring people into Westbrook and the Community Center so they are able to see what their community has available to them.”

Swett said the General Assistance program requires clients to look for work in order to work toward “self-sustaining and stability.”

The job fair will feature representatives from the Greater Portland Career Center, Labor Ready, Bonney Staffing, Kelly Services, Adecco and Office Team, along with area businesses such as Sigco, Marden’s and Goodwill Industries. For more information contact Swett at 854-0676, ext. 5280.
