Scarborough Little League registration

Registration for the 2006 Scarborough Little League season will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 (9-11 a.m.), Sunday, Feb. 5 (noon-2 p.m.) and Tuesday, Feb. 7 (6-8 p.m.) in chambers A and B of Scarborough Town Hall. Any boy or girl from kindergarten age to 16 years old who lives in the town is eligible to enroll to play baseball or softball. All candidates are expected to register, regardless of past enrollment, and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Those signing up for the first time must provide proof of residence and an original or state-certified copy of the child’s birth certificate. The registration fee for T-Ball and Single A is $50; Minor and Major Leagues is $65; and Junior and Senior Leagues is $85 per child. Discounts are available for multiple children in Minor, Major, Junior and Senior leagues. There will be a $25 late fee per family on all registrations received after Feb. 15. Swish for a good cause

The 12th annual Swish-Out Challenge 3-on-3 tournament will be held at USM on Sun., Feb. 12. Proceeds benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Since 1993, more than $55,000 has been raised through the event. Teams may be of any size with the only stipulation being that a member of the opposite sex is on the court at all times. Participants receive a prize just for playing, as well as a T-shirt. Plaques are awarded to the top four teams, with this year’s champion receiving a picnic for 20 people at a Portland Sea Dogs game. Space is limited to the first 36 teams to register. Legion ball blood drive

The Libby-Mitchell American Legion Post 76 baseball team will hold its sixth annual Red Cross blood drive Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Scarborough police station. The team is again shooting for the state record for the most successful donors for a team and town of our size in the state.

USM softball pitching clinics continue

USM’s softball program is holding weekly pitching clinics starting Sunday at the Costello Sports Complex on the school’s Gorham campus. The clinics, directed by Huskies’ coaches and players, are open to all pitchers, from beginners to advanced. Sessions run for one hour starting at 9 a.m. Pitchers may attend any and all of the clinics and should bring someone to catch for them. The cost is $10 per session. Pizza sales to help girls hockey

The Flatbread Company will donate $3.50 for every large pizza ordered from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to help the Scarborough High School girls ice hockey program. The restaurant is located at 72 Commercial St. in Portland (telephone: 772-8777), with its entrance facing the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal. Freeze hoping for thaw

The Maine Freeze, Portland’s five-year-old National Women’s Football Association franchise, has announced its eight-game 2006 schedule. The Freeze will open its season at Fitzpatrick Stadium Apr. 22 against the Connecticut Crush. The Tennessee-based NWFA includes 33 teams nationwide. The Freeze will attempt to bounce back from last year’s 0-8 campaign.

Coaching spot open

Southern Maine Community College is currently accepting resumes for the assistant baseball coaching position. Position duties includes on-field coaching and recruitment of student athletes. SMCC, located in South Portland, is a member of the Yankee Small College Conference and plays both a fall and spring collegiate season. This position will remain open until a qualified candidate is identified. Taking game to the next level

The Next Level Basketball Camp, directed by new head coach Lori Gear McBride, will take place at Colby College this summer, with overnight camps set for June 25-29 and July 9-13 for girls between the ages of 8-17. Formerly known as the Colby College Basketball Camp for Girls, the camp will feature a commitment to skill development in a fun and productive atmosphere. Tuition is $450 per camper and includes all meals, lodging in the Colby dorms, camp T-shirts, activities and excellent basketball instruction.
