The Raymond Lions started a scholarship program in 2003, using the proceeds from its bottle collection centers at the Town Office and at Jordan Bay Animal Hospital. The first year the group awarded one scholarship of $500. Last year they awarded three $650 scholarships. This year the club presented two $1,000 scholarships.

Twelve applications for its scholarship were received this year. After much consideration the scholarship committee awarded the scholarships to two deserving students, Katrina Draper and Chelsea Frye.

Draper, who attended Hebron Academy, will be attending University of Kings College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has been active in sports, drama and art as well as maintaining an A/B average. She has worked locally during the summer months. She plans on going to medical school and fulfilling a longtime dream of practicing medicine in Ecuador, bringing health care to impoverished areas.

Frye, who attended Gray/New Gloucester High School, will be attending Suffolk University in Boston, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Spanish. She participated in sports and volunteer activities and was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of student council for three years. She maintained an A/B average while working after school.

The Raymond Lions congratulate these two exceptional students who are examples of what high school students are capable of achieving. We wish Katrina and Chelsea much success in continuing their education and in their careers.

Also of note is that the Lions use the funds from the bottle returns to fund its scholarships as well as donating a portion of those funds to the town of Raymond for town scholarships. Several times in the past three years it has been noted that people have been seen stealing bottles from the two drop-off centers. If you should see any of these culprits in the act of taking bottles, please make note of the license number and report it to the sheriff’s office at 693-3369 immediately.
