A report released in December by the National Governor’s Association (NGA) and the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) ranks Maine as having the eighth-lowest state spending growth rate in the country.
The Fiscal Survey of States, published twice annually by the two organizations since 1979, presents aggregate and individual data on the states’ general fund receipts, expenditures and balances. These funds are used to finance most broad-based state services, and are the most important elements in determining the fiscal health of the states.
According to the report, Maine’s spending growth rate was 0.9 percent. Comparatively, Massachusetts topped the spending growth list in New England with an increase of 7.6 percent and Oregon saw their spending increase the most nationally, by 20 percent.
