Scarborough 49

Marshwood 39

The Scarborough boys’ basketball team jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead Friday against Marshwood and never looked back as they cruised to a 49-39 win in the Maine Mall Holiday Classic. Andy Pogar led the Red Storm with 12 points and Logan Oliver had eight.

Scarborough opened the game with a 9-2 run. Chris Hughes accounted for four of the nine points. The Red Storm caused several turnovers on defense and didn’t allow the Hawks to get any sort of rhythm. By the end of the first quarter, Scarborough held an already commanding lead, 17-7.

The second quarter was more of the same. Despite Marshwood scoring six straight points at one point, the Storm still held them at bay. Pogar took over midway through the second quarter. On defense he was causing turnovers and knocking down passes. He scored Scarborough’s final seven points of the quarter that gave them a 28-17 halftime lead.

The Red Storm opened up their biggest lead of the game in the third quarter. They were able to grab rebounds above the Hawks most of the time thanks to Pogar and Jim Hiltner. The Storm began the quarter with a 9-3 run to open up a 17-point advantage. Marshwood inched back closer with five points in a row late in the quarter, but Oliver drained a three-pointer and the Storm hit another jumper to pull out to a 42-25 cushion at the end of the third quarter.

With their big lead intact and time running out, Scarborough coach Matt Townsend pulled his starters out during the fourth quarter. That resulted in a 12-0 run midway through the fourth by the Hawks. In spite of the run, Marshwood only got as close as six points. At that point the Storm finished off the Hawks with a small run of their own to pull out to a safer 10-point margin.
